As times change and with COVID some people have shown that they like to file things electronically. "We would always respond and people expected that. "When I started 30 years ago when a person called for law enforcement services they wanted to see a law enforcement officer on site," Hinkley said. Hinkley said while the sheriff's department traditionally sends a deputy to meet anyone with a complaint, not everyone wants contact. Last year the department answered about 24,000 calls for service. The website also has information about seeking crash reports, and incident reports through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), as well as obtaining dog licenses.Ī map showing the areas of crime complaints also is available although those are listed about a week after the date of the complaint. Inmates boarded at the jail by other departments are not listed on the website, but rather through the agency which contracts beds at the jail. The jail population on Tuesday was 374 people including 290 local inmates and 84 people who are housed at the jail for other agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Hinkley said last year 6,252 people were booked into the jail. Hinkley said people interested in a case against an inmate can then look for the Register of Actions for the district court or the circuit court to determine the progress of a case and the times and dates for hearings or trials.Ĭourt schedules are available at the Calhoun County website. "We are showing current information, not historical information." "This is live information and not a long-term record," he said. The website provides the information without requiring a phone call. Hinkley said corrections staff receive hundreds of calls a week from people asking if someone is in jail and if so how much is their bond. The information is deleted when the inmate is released from custody. Information on each inmate, including their charge, amount of their bond and their pictures are available as soon as that person is booked into the jail. "One of the big things is the inmate portal so that people can learn if someone is in jail and how much is their bond and how do they bond them out," Hinkley said. Hinkley said an addition that should help people is an updated list of all local prisoners at the county jail. The Police to Citizen Site is part of the sheriff department website available through the website for Calhoun County: People can go directly to the new site at: /Home "It gives the public information that is at their fingertips." "This is all new and there will be some tweaking and some changes," Hinkley said Tuesday.
